Human Rights Groups Hammer Targeted Killing Program

Human Rights Watch published a report on Monday criticizing the U.S. drone-based targeted killing program in Yemen for causing excessive civilian deaths in violation of international humanitarian law. On the same day Amnesty International published a similar report critical of the targeted killing program in Pakistan.

  1. I find this topic interesting due to our recent discussion about when states can violate certain international human rights laws because the very existence of the state is at risk. While clearly the U.S. is not at risk of collapsing if these drone attacks don't continue, it seems to me that some justification can still be drawn by arguing that these attacks ultimately still protect U.S. citizens lives. These circumstances, however, do not reach the level of "us or them" and I think the US should listen to these international warnings and take responsibility for how it has overused its armed forces.
